What Fall is complete without a visit to an apple orchard? Little Sioux Orchard just south of the Iowa Great Lakes is sure to get you in a festive fall mood with a hay ride to the pick your own orchard. With a variety of apples ripening through out the season there should always be fresh crisp apples ready to be picked and enjoyed. If you are here September 29th be sure to bring your bikes and sign up for the Iowa Great Lakes Chamber’s Oktoberfest Bike Ride. By signing up you get a wrist band that allows for drink and dinning specials around the Lakes area. Want to skip the biking and just enjoy Oktoberfest games and festivities you can do that too! A fall highlight for locals and visitors alike is the Artisans Road Trip. October 13th and 14th your group can enjoy a self-guided studio and gallery tour that spans from Ida Grove to Estherville (with plenty to see in between), highlighting the work of local artists in a variety of mediums. If you are looking to get away with the girls for some Christmas shopping Okoboji is your place Nov. 9th and 10th. The Wow Women’s Weekend hosts a vendor show at the Dickinson County Expo building and stores throughout the area will be hosting open houses and running specials.

Rent a boat or take a ride on the Queen II, departing from Arnolds Park Amusement Park at 3:00 on Saturday’s. Fall is a perfect and calm time to try a paddle board or kayak. If you like lake life better from the land there are many beaches for a relaxing afternoon of fun in the sun, not to mention that fall is one if the best times to enjoy lakeside drinks and dinning at The Okoboji Store, The Waterfront, The Dry Dock, The Ritz, The Garden’s, or The Barefoot Bar.

After full day the hardest decisions you may have is where to have happy hour and get something to eat! For a before or after dinner drink Okoboji Commons Tasting Room is a must while in Okoboji. For a unique cocktail or small plate appetizer you can’t go wrong. You will feel like you are in a big city. Fall is the PERFECT time for lakeside dinning at The Okoboji Store, Waters Edge, The Gardens or The Ritz. If you are in search of a place you can go Okoboji Casual or dress up and visit in a quiet environment check out Yesterday’s, Minerva’s, Kazarelli’s, Outrigger, Or High-Point. High-Point overlooks beautiful West Lake Okoboji and the sunsets from there are breathtaking, free, and not to be missed. The Dry Dock and rooftop bar at Captain’s Getaway are great are also great places to watch the sunset. Many of the local eateries and bars still have live entertainment on the weekends. Of course the one thing any Girls Getaway must include is shopping and Okoboji has it all year round! From unique boutiques, Okoboji clothes, house wares, antique shops and everything in between Okoboji shopping can fill a whole day or more! If shopping is your game you won’t want to miss Okoboji WOW Women’s Weekend November 9th and 10th, the perfect girls getaway, complete with a vendor show at the Dickinson County Expo building. Many stores will be decked out for the holidays and will be holding open houses and have great specials.
Start your day at the growing and eclectic shops on Hill Avenue in Spirit Lake, you can even get coffee or breakfast at Deli on the Ave or The Family Diner. You are sure to find a treasure you cannot live without at Timeless Consignments or This and That Eclectic. Next stop is The Great Lakes Mall where you can clothes shop for all ages at Fashion Formula, The Look, or Wild Child. You can also find the perfect accessories at Spirit Lake Silver and Gold. If your looking to redecorate a room or your whole house you will want to set aside plenty of time to spend at Interiors . Next head south on highway 71 to Mary’s Home Decor and Gift shop, where you can shop for clothes, house wares or a wide variety of kitchen gadgets. Continue on down the road and make sure to stop at Lace, Okoboji’s premier lingerie boutique. From there head to West Boutique for brands like Free People, Sperry, Everly, Velvet Heart and much more. By now you may be ready for lunch at Minerva’s, The Hutt or Tweeter’s will be sure to fill you up and energize you for some more shopping. You will most definitely want to check out Elements and Homeology for home decor, clothes and much more! Of course, no trip to Okoboji is complete without shopping at The Three Sons in Milford, need we say more?
If your group has a pull to the Artsy side of life a stop at the Pearson Lakes Art Center would be time well spent. Check the calendar of events as there may be a concert, class or movie to take in while you are here. Finally, if you would prefer to get your hands dirty there is Creative Spirits in Spirit Lake, where you can enjoy a glass of wine while painting an original masterpiece with the guidance of a professional instructor.
