Explore building processes and create volumetric pastel drawings. Expand understanding of color theory by investigating the inherent properties of pastels and color optics. Participants will incorporate Principles of Design, methods, techniques and observation of light on form to create volumetric drawings.
Register by calling 712-332-7013, Pearson Lakes Art Center

    Workshop Syllabus:
Day 1 – Introduction: Volume as the study of light. Review Chiaro e Scuro and the concept of luminosity. Review on color chroma and color theory. Discuss color temperature. Introduce the inherent properties of pastel. Review Principles of Design. Discuss volumes in depth as it relates to color.
Project I: From observation: 5 objects placed with single light source. Vantage point is a 3/4 view. Closed composition; Discuss and identify local inherent color of each object.

    Day 2: Project I continued:
Project II: Creating depth through color intensity on Grey BFK or mezzotine paper. Participants will create a mechanical line drawing in vine charcoal viewing lighted objects from an aerial perspective. Shadows both volumetric and cast will be outlined in vine.

    Day 3: Project II continued:
Project III: The baseline construction from observation of several objects set in shallow space with right angle lighting. Participants will do a preliminary closed composition, Chiaro e Scuro sketch on newsprint – the actual size of a baseline perspective.
Introduction: Discussion on color contrasts, vibration, weight and volume.

    Day 4: Project III continued:
Project IV: Discussion on triads. The reflected surface observing a metallic object is the subject matter. Chroma light and shadow and reflected light will be explored using elements of color theory to generate volumes. On square 22 x 22 inch grey messotine paper, participants will view the lighted and reflective quality of a volume using a closed composition and 3/4 view.

    Day 5: Project IV continued:
    Final critique
