Why Okoboji Summer Theatre Still Shines After 67 Seasons

When it comes to live theatre in Okoboji, few institutions capture the spirit of summer quite like the Okoboji Summer Theatre. Since 1958, this beloved cultural cornerstone has delighted audiences with professional performances, student talent, and a legacy built on passion, community, and tradition.

But it all started with a vision.

In 1953, local community leaders dreamed of bringing live theatre to their Iowa Great Lakes hometown. After a few early misfires with other colleges, they found their perfect match in Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. That partnership gave birth to the Okoboji Summer Theatre, and it’s been a summer staple ever since.

A Unique Immersive Theatre Experience

In just two years, Stephens College redesigned their BFA in Theatre Arts to include two required summers of hands-on training in Okoboji. At Okoboji Summer Theatre, students work in a fully immersive setting—acting, building sets, designing lighting, and collaborating with alumni and guest artists.

This isn’t your average summer gig. It’s a fast-paced, professional environment where future stars and seasoned performers share the stage. Many alumni have gone on to successful careers in theater, television, film, and even video game design.

“Magic is created here,” says Bernard Monroe, returning for his third season as Artistic Director. “There’s a sense of freedom in creating what you don’t often find in other regional theatres.”

Community-Driven, Artistically Powered

What makes Okoboji Summer Theatre so unique isn’t just the talent on stage. It’s also the unwavering community support. Over 100 local association members, many of whom are longtime volunteers, provide advice, energy, and encouragement to keep the theatre thriving.

“Okoboji Summer Theatre volunteers want us to succeed,” says Executive Director Ruth Ann Burke. “They give wonderful advice and insight into the community.”

Ruth Ann and her husband, Michael Burke (Director of Production), have seen the theatre grow and evolve over decades. Michael began as a student in 1984 and remembers when attending a live performance was the highlight of the week.

“The early ’80s were amazing,” he recalls. “It got me hooked. You could see just how much the community cared.”

Embracing New Audiences and Fresh Shows

In 2025, Okoboji Summer Theatre celebrates its 67th season with a mix of timeless classics and bold new productions. While the local entertainment scene has expanded—with everything from lakeside concerts to brewery trivia nights—the theatre continues to draw in loyal patrons and new audiences alike.

Shows like Bright Star, a lesser-known Steve Martin musical, have proven that risk can bring reward. “It was not a title everybody knew about,” Ruth Ann said, “but when they gave it a chance and showed up, it was great.” Word-of-mouth carried it to a sold-out final weekend.

And it’s not just for the seasoned theatre fans. Productions like Mary PoppinsFreaky Friday, and Legally Blonderesonate with younger crowds and families, offering fun summer memories for all ages.
